Video to GIF with no upload — how local conversion works

Most “video to GIF” sites ask you to upload a file to a server. LocalVideoGif is built so the clip is read in your tab and encoded on your device.

What “no upload” means

When you choose a file, the browser gives this page a local handle (a File / object URL). The conversion path (ffmpeg.wasm when bundled) reads those bytes in WebAssembly memory inside the tab. The GIF you download is assembled locally. Our origin does not need a copy of your video to finish the job.

How to verify

  1. Open DevTools → Network.
  2. Pick a short test clip you own and run Convert.
  3. Confirm there is no large POST/PUT of your media to localvideogif.pages.dev (or any other host).

You may still see requests for static assets (HTML, CSS, JS, wasm). That is normal and is not your video.

Why we still cap length

Local does not mean unlimited. WASM video encode is RAM-hungry. Caps (15s, ~100 MB, modest FPS/width) keep failures predictable instead of silently crashing the tab.
